The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation at University of Surrey 2025

Cowrie Scholarship Foundation Overview:

• Two full scholarships available for Black British undergraduate students from low-income backgrounds.
• Aimed at supporting students for up to three years, covering tuition fees and providing £8,000 annually for living expenses.
• Partnership between the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation and the University of Surrey.
• The Foundation aims to support over 100 students in the next decade, funded by universities, donors, and businesses, with mentoring included.

Eligibility Criteria:

• UK/Home students intending to join the University of Surrey in September 2025.
• Applicants must identify as one of the following ethnic groups:
  • Black or Black British – Caribbean
  • Black or Black British – African
  • Mixed – White and Black Caribbean
  • Mixed – White and Black African
  • Other Black background
• Household income must be £25,000 or less per year.
• Must have applied for tuition fee support and maintenance loans through Student Finance or the
• Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).
• Must be confirmed to receive full financial support for the 2025/26 academic year, and consent to share this info with the University.

How to Apply:

• Complete the online application form by 1st May 2025.
• Ensure you have started the University of Surrey application process (contact admissions if needed).
• All applications are reviewed impartially and shortlisted before being shared with the Cowrie Foundation.
• Successful applicants will be notified in Autumn 2025.

Additional Information:

• Priority will be given to applicants with the lowest household income, those from areas with low progression to higher education, and those facing educational challenges.
