This scholarship is named in honour of Mr Thomas Eakins, the Philadelphia native renowned for his 1875 painting "The Gross Clinic," which depicts Dr. Samuel Gross. Dr. Gross, known as the "Emperor of American Surgery" in the 19th century, authored 14 books and 1,200 articles on surgery, general medicine, and medical history.
