This PhD project focuses on improving CFD models used to predict boiling heat transfer and Critical Heat Flux (CHF) in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). The goal is to enhance reactor safety, efficiency, and economic viability by reducing uncertainties in current models. Key improvements will involve accounting for real-world boiling surface characteristics, such as microscopic defects, and incorporating microscale properties to better predict CHF.
The project will help PWRs operate more efficiently at higher power levels, reduce safety margins, and optimize reactor surfaces and materials. You’ll work with a multidisciplinary team at the University of Sheffield and Rolls-Royce, with the potential for an internship.
Funding includes a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per year and £46,500 for research support over 4 years. The studentship is open to UK, EU, and ATAS-exempt international applicants.
