Gateway Antarctica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Scholarship in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies 2025

In 2001, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Scholarship was established to promote Antarctic Studies research and education, acknowledging Antarctica as a continent dedicated to peace and research. 

Eligibility criteria for Gateway Antarctica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Scholarship in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies:

• Applicants must be studying for a PhD or be in the thesis year of a master’s degree at the University of Canterbury in an Antarctic-related topic.
• Applicants are required to undertake research concerning a matter of importance to the understanding of Antarctica or the Southern Ocean. At least one of the scholars' study supervisors shall be the Professor of Antarctic Studies or a representative of him.

Value of the scholarship:

Successful applicants will get financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $5,000.

There is no application form. Applicants must provide the following:

• Curriculum Vitae
• Academic Transcript
• Two letters of support
• Research Proposal (1-3 pages)
• Name of supervisor or supervisors
• Details of any other scholarships held
