In 2001, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Scholarship was established to promote Antarctic Studies research and education, acknowledging Antarctica as a continent dedicated to peace and research.
Eligibility criteria for Gateway Antarctica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Scholarship in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies:
- Applicants must be studying for a PhD or be in the thesis year of a master’s degree at the University of Canterbury in an Antarctic-related topic.
- Applicants are required to undertake research concerning a matter of importance to the understanding of Antarctica or the Southern Ocean. At least one of the scholars' study supervisors shall be the Professor of Antarctic Studies or a representative of him.
Value of the scholarship:
Successful applicants will get financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $5,000.
