PhD Research Assistant - Auburn University, Alabama
Position Overview
- Auburn University is seeking an ambitious candidate for a fully funded PhD research assistantship in the College of Forestry, Wildlife, and Environment.
- The position focuses on the remote sensing of forest health, specifically researching the detection and assessment of a fungal pathogen affecting pine trees in the southeastern U.S.
- This three-year PhD program, beginning Fall/Spring 2022/2023, offers a unique opportunity to work in the Geospatial Analytics Lab, using innovative remote sensing technologies and machine learning methods to advance ecosystem sciences.
Research Focus
- The research will include multi-scale applications of remote sensing, using lidar data from UAVs, airborne, and satellite platforms.
- The candidate will conduct research on forest health, particularly detecting the spread of a fungal pathogen affecting pine trees, and contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations.
- Collaboration with a large interdisciplinary team, including graduate students, postdocs, and scientists, is a key aspect of this project.
Required Qualifications
- MS in Forestry, Ecology, or a closely related field
- Strong communication skills in oral and written English
- Completed coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or experience with remote sensing
Preferred Experience
- Strong quantitative skills
