Estranged Student Bursary at UCL

Eligibility

The Estranged Student Bursary is aimed at UK students who meet the definition of estrangement from their family.

To be eligible, students must:

• Be domiciled in the UK with Home fee status.
• Be under 25 years old and classified as an independent student due to estrangement by Student Finance.
• Hold an offer of admission to UCL for a full-time undergraduate degree for the 2024/25 intake or be currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate degree at UCL.

Application Process

• You do not need to complete a separate application for the Estranged Student Bursary.
• To apply, first:
• Apply to study a full-time undergraduate course at UCL.
• Apply for student finance with your Regional Funding Authority and fill out a Confirmation of Estrangement Form for the academic year.
• Student Finance will assess your application, and if you are classified as independent due to estrangement, UCL will automatically assess you for the bursary once they receive confirmation of your status.

Value and Benefits

• The bursary is worth £1,000 per year for the duration of the student's full-time undergraduate programme, as long as they remain under 25.
• The award is intended to help with maintenance costs during your studies.
• Additionally, awardees can request an advance payment of £200 to assist with transition costs.

Selection

• Students must apply for the full entitlement of student finance and prove their estrangement status for Student Finance purposes.
• Note that students eligible for the Care Leaver Bursary cannot be considered for the Estranged Student Bursary.
