Eligibility for the DAAD German Studies Research Grant:

  • The DAAD German Studies Research Grant is open to permanent residents/citizens of the US and Canada and international students.
  • Applicants must be registered as full-time students at the university that will nominate them.
  • The undergraduate students who are applying for the grant must
    • have at least junior (third-year) standing
    • be studying a German Studies track or minor
    • be nominated by their department and/or program chair
    • have completed at least 3 courses in German Studies (politics, literature, history or other fields) and two years of college German
  • The master's students who are applying for the DAAD German Studies Research Grant must
    • be students in the humanities and social sciences receiving a certificate or working on a project in German Studies
    • be nominated by their department and/or program chair
    • have completed at least 3 courses in German Studies (politics, literature, history or other fields) and two years of college German
  • The PhD students who are applying for the DAAD German Studies Research Grant must
    • be students in the humanities and social sciences in the process of preparing their dissertation proposals on modern German topics
    • be nominated by their principal advisor
    • have completed two years of college-level German language studies and a minimum of three courses in German Studies

Value of the DAAD German Studies Research Grant:

Research support ranging in value from $2,000 to $3,000 is available to individual scholarship recipients and is intended to offset living and travel costs during the active research phase. Support cannot be provided for stays in Germany in the context of study abroad programs.

Application process:

  • Prepare application materials, including:
    • Completed application form
    • CV (résumé)
    • Detailed research project description, including timeline and itinerary
    • Budget plan
    • List of German language and German Studies courses taken
    • Two letters of recommendation (including from the nominating professor)
    • Official transcripts
    • Completed DAAD language evaluation form (signed by a German Department faculty member)
  • Submit the application in both electronic and physical formats.

Deadlines: May 1 and November 1 each year for typical cycles.
