The University and Edinburgh Law School offer a range of scholarships for our research degrees. Therefore the University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position on a project entitled “Reversing the Gaze”. The successful applicant will work with Dr Deval Desai in the Edinburgh Law School.
Reversing the Gaze is a Swiss National Science Foundation-funded four-year project between Edinburgh Law School, the University of Zurich, and the University of Basel. It explores whether and how concepts developed in and of the Global South can fruitfully be used to analyse political phenomena in Europe.
Eligibility criteria for The University of Edinburgh PhD Studentship, 2022:
- Applicants from all nationalities are eligible.
- Applicants must have a minimum of a UK honours degree and a UK Masters degree with at least 60% in the taught section and 65% or more in the dissertation (or their international equivalents) in law.
- Applicants must have a strong background, or clear demonstrable interest, in administrative, tax, or welfare law in India; a strong interest in EU law; and a desire to pursue interdisciplinary and comparative research.
- Applicants must have experience in qualitative field methods.
- Applicants must have proficiency in English (both oral and written). For candidate’s whose first language is not English, we require an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each component (or other acceptable English language qualification at the equivalent standard).
- Applicants must have some competence in Hindi.
- Applicants must have excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Value of The University of Edinburgh PhD Studentship, 2022:
Successful applicants of the University of Edinburgh PhD Studentship, 2022 will receive the following benefits-
- Tuition fees.
- An annual stipend in line with UKRI rates (approximately £15,500 per annum).
- Additional research costs of £1,000 per year will also be available.
Note: The stipend will be paid in equal monthly instalments for 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory progress.
