The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, University of Manchester provides Sasakawa Japanese Studies Postgraduate Studentship. This funding is available to students undertaking postgraduate research in full-time Japanese studies.
Eligibility Criteria of the Scholarship:
- Applicants may come from any nationality.
- Applicants must be enrolled in an MA or PhD program in Japanese Studies.
- Current students who have already accepted an offer of a full scholarship for September 2025 entry are ineligible.
- Applicants must exhibit outstanding academics.
- Applicants must provide a high-quality research proposal.

- The application should include the following documents:
- Completed studentship application form
- Research proposal (1500 word)
- Latest education qualification transcripts
- Two referees
- Evidence of English proficiency
- CV
Value of the Scholarship:
The successful candidates are awarded studentships worth GBP 15,000 for one year.
Note: PhD candidates previously awarded the Sasakawa studentship can be nominated once more, and may continue to receive the scholarship for a maximum duration of three years.
