- Be conducting doctoral research focused on Southeast Asia and its people
- Undertake research related to one or more of the following countries:
- Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Viet Nam
- Have a research topic especially (but not exclusively) related to history, culture, or society of Southeast Asia
- Meet all eligibility requirements outlined in the official Scholarship Regulations
- Demonstrate how their research advances knowledge and understanding of Southeast Asia and contributes to New Zealand’s interests in the region
Value of the The Nicholas Tarling PhD Memorial Scholarship:
The successful candidates are awarded a sum of NZD 10,000 per annum.
