This Indigenous PhD scholarship at Flinders University, Adelaide, will involve research on Australian Indigenous objects and representations sent to exhibitions up to 1939. The project aims to uncover the hidden histories of these objects and their cultural significance, with an emphasis on repatriation, collaboration with Indigenous communities, and reshaping global museum practices. The candidate will work with a team to study museum collections, engage with cultural representatives, and contribute to telling new stories about Australia's Indigenous heritage.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
- Identify as Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Be recognized as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by their community;
- Be either currently enrolled or eligible for admission to a higher degree by research at Flinders University
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or hold permanent resident status
- Meet the PhD admission criteria, which include having an Australian Honours degree (Class 1 or 2A) or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), with a research component of at least six months full-time study with Distinction (75%) OR possess equivalent research experience such as a significant first-author refereed publication or a strong record as an investigator on a competitive grant
- Be available to begin full-time PhD study at Flinders University in semester 1, 2025.
Application Process:
- You will only be considered if you can provide evidence that you meet all the required criteria. Refer to the 'Admission requirements' for the HDR course you wish to apply for.
- Gather your academic transcripts and an Experience statement, as you did before reaching out to academic staff for supervision. Note that Flinders University transcripts are not required.
- Prepare your Research Project outline. Be aware that it may be subject to text-matching software. Ensure that an academic staff member has agreed to supervise your HDR project and save the confirmation email or letter from the proposed supervisor as a single file titled ‘(YOUR SURNAME) Supervisor confirmation.’
