Dr Leon Wescombe Honours Scholarship in Medicine 2023

Whether it was via his enthusiasm for medical research or his love of travel and adventure, Dr. Leon Wescombe lived life to the fullest. He was from Devonport, had attended Don College in the past, and graduated with honors in microbiology and biochemistry in 2005 from the University of Tasmania. Leon's honors thesis, which was published in the esteemed European Respiratory Journal, examined how bacteria in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients produce the toxin cyanide. This was the first time that cyanide production in a human lung disease context had been described.

Eligibility for Dr Leon Wescombe Honours Scholarship in Medicine:

• Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (H3X) programs beginning and continuing in Semester 1, 2024, who were educated in Tasmania's north or north-west and require financial aid to relocate for their studies.
• Applicants must exhibit a sincere interest in general practice to be considered.

Retaining the scholarship:

Every semester, the student must receive at least a passing grade in every unit they study.
