    The University Recommended Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship is offered by the University of Tokyo for international students planning to pursue their master's or doctoral programs at the University's School of science.

    Eligibility criteria for the University Recommended Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship:

    • Be an international student with a minimum GPA of 2.30 on the MEXT scale
    • Apply as a new master’s or doctoral student starting in October 2026
    • Hold or be completing a degree eligible for admission to the Graduate School of Science University of Tokyo
    • Meet language proficiency requirements in English at CEFR B2 or higher or Japanese at JLPT N2 or higher
    • Be born on or after 2 April 1991
    • Be physically and mentally healthy
    • Hold nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
    • Be able to arrive in Japan around October 2026
    • Obtain a student visa
    • Not be residing in Japan at the time of application
    • Not be a current or recent MEXT scholarship recipient except permitted cases

    Value of the University Recommended Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship:

    • Monthly stipend
      • ¥144,000/month (Master’s)
      • ¥145,000/month (Doctoral)
    • Full tuition and enrollment fees waived
    • Round-trip economy airfare to and from Japan (conditions apply)
    • Possible regional allowance (¥2,000–¥3,000/month)

    Application Process:

    • Apply for admission to the Graduate School of Science.
    • Submit MEXT scholarship application documents online.
    • Preliminary selection by the Graduate School of Science.
    • University-wide selection by the University of Tokyo.
    • Final screening and decision by MEXT.
    • Successful candidates enroll in October 2026.
