University of Melbourne Peter Steele Poetry Award 2024

The Peter Steele Poetry Award is a writing-up award for students who have submitted a thesis within the past five years, with preference given to Ph.D. students. The award is for students who have included a poetry collection or verse novel as part of their thesis and may be used to support activities related to the preparation of a manuscript for submission or publication.

Eligibility for Peter Steele Poetry Award 2024:

• Applicants must have submitted a thesis at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Arts within the previous 5 years of the scholarship closing date.
• Applicants must have included a poetry collection or verse novel as part of the thesis.
• Applicants must use the funds to assist with the preparation of a manuscript for submission or publication.
• Applicants must present a public reading or talk at Newman College and/or a presentation to the Creative Writing Program, or the English and Theatre Studies Program at the University of Melbourne.

Selection Criteria:

• The quality of the poetry, as assessed by the Selection Committee.
• Academic merit
• Preference will be given to writing up PhD thesis.

Value of Peter Steele Poetry Award 2024:

Successful applicants of the Peter Steele Poetry Award 2024 will receive AUD 5,000 to support activities related to the preparation of a manuscript for submission or publication.
