Dr. Anita Silvers Scholarship Fund in Philosophy for Continuing M.A. Students' scholarship will be awarded for the 2024-2025 Academic Year. Students must enroll HALF-TIME (4 units graduate) during the 2024-2025 Academic Year to receive the scholarship.
Dr. Anita Silvers taught philosophy at San Francisco State University for more than 50 years. She is a globally renowned philosopher and disability rights activist. She also held the position of department head from 2006 till her passing in 2019 and from 1981 to 1986. Dr. Anita Silvers was a staunch advocate for giving students who couldn't afford it on their access to higher education through the public system.
Purpose:
The Dr. Anita Silvers Scholarship in Philosophy for Continuing Students is intended to give students pursuing an M.A. in Philosophy significant financial support. Depending on the application pool, the quantity and value of scholarships awarded may change from year to year. The donor hopes that the scholarship will attract and retain students of a caliber that will enhance the program's reputation, mission, and standing as a pioneer in the field of philosophy education in public higher education as well as a leader in diversifying the philosophy field.
Eligible Criteria:
- Applicants must be Currently enrolled as a graduate student in the Philosophy M.A. program or have been admitted to the M.A. program.
- The enrolment requirement for Graduation students is 4 units
- Minimum GPA required: SF State Undergrad GPA: 3.3; SF State Grad GPA: 3.3
- Names of two SFSU graduate faculty who can serve as references for academic achievement
- Unofficial transcripts from student’s prior degree programs; unofficial transcript from SFSU; list of courses currently in progress
- Explanation of why the scholarship would be useful and additional information the applicant thinks would be useful in evaluating the application.

- Submit a statement of purpose (up to 1000 words) explaining your motivation for studying philosophy and your plans for further study. The statement should also include an explanation of why the scholarship would be useful and additional information that you think would be useful in evaluating your application.
- Submit a short statement (up to 500 words) describing your financial need and detailing evidence which may include but is not limited to FAFSA information (FAFSA not currently required).
