The 1950s-developed motto of York University, "Tentanda Via: The Way Must Be Tried," embraces the ageless ideas of ambition, determination, courage, and innovation. York's motto, Tentanda Via, has been immortalized as an award given to deserving undergraduates who have overcome difficulties.

Eligibility for Tentanda Via Award at the University of York:

  • The applicant must have faced significant challenges in their personal life but has continued to push through and shown strength and determination to achieve a university education.
  • The applicant must be a student leader or changemaker who is committed to making positive changes.
  • The applicant must show dedication to sustainable development projects and work on important issues of today, whether related to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or other complex problems.
  • The successful applicants must finish a minimum of 24 credits for Fall/Winter and maintain excellent academic standing (minimum 6.0 SGPA) to be eligible for renewal.
  • In addition, the winners must provide evidence of their sustained participation in their original initiatives or proof of their active voluntary activity in the York or outside community. 

Application Process:

The candidates need to fill out an online application form to apply for the scholarship. The application should include the following components:

  • Response to a personal statement
  • Other supporting documents as and when requested by the university.

Value of the Scholarship:

The successful candidates are awarded a scholarship based on the following quota:

  • Domestic awards - CAD 10,000 p.a.
  • International awards - CAD 30,000 p.a.
