Introduction
When you apply to a reputed university which is in a country where English is the native language, you would need to qualify for an English Proficiency Test to receive admission to the said university. It is mandatory in most colleges because to understand the classes and communicate efficiently with your peers and others, you would need to be fluent in English.
The PTE Exam is one of the many English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, and DET. The student must be at least 16 years old to take the PTE Exam. Keep reading to learn more about the PTE Exam in detail.
PTE Full Form
The full form of PTE is the Pearson Test of English. The PTE exam is one of the most widely accepted English language competency tests in most countries all over the world.
The PTE Exam is accepted in more than 3500 universities in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
The exam is 2 hours long and has the following test sections:
- Speaking
- Writing
- Reading
- Listening
Types of PTE Exam
There are 3 types of PTE Exams which include, PTE Academic, PTE Core, and UK VISA tests.
PTE Academic Exam
- The PTE Academic exam applies to you if you plan to study at a university where English is the native language.
PTE Core Exam
- The PTE Core can be helpful if you are applying for permanent residency in Canada or Canadian citizenship.
UK VISA Tests
There are 4 kinds of UKVI PTE Exams you can attempt depending on your requirements. Here are the details of all 4 of them.
- PTE Academic UKVI: It has the same requirements and syllabus as the PTE Academic exam. The difference between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI is that the UKVI test provides you with a unique reference number (URN) which can help in your UK visa application
- PTE Home A1: This is a beginner-level English test for Spouses, Parents of a Dependent in the UK, Representatives of an Overseas Business, and Sportsperson visas.
- PTE Home A2: This test is for people who are looking to extend their family VISA in the UK
- PTE Home B1: This test is for people applying for settlement or citizenship application in the UK
You should choose PTE Academic UKVI if you meet the following criteria:
- The course you are applying for is below degree level
- If you are trying to apply for a Tier 2 General work visa
- A start-up visa
- An innovator visa

How to register for the PTE Exam?
In this section, we will take you through the process of PTE Exam booking thoroughly.
- Step 1: Visit the website pearsonpte.com
- Step 2: Click on the ‘Book a Test’ in the top right corner of the page
- Step 3: Then select ‘Book PTE Academic’
After selecting the ‘Book PTE Academic’ you’ll see an option to choose a test center near your location, available dates, and timing of the tests available near you.
- Step 4: Enter your location and select the test center closest to your location.
- Step 5: Then you will be asked to create your myPTE account.
- Step 6: After filling in the details to register for your myPTE account click on submit.
- Step 7: Re-check your booking details and click on confirm.
Note: Read the ID policy mentioned on your myPTE account to have a clear idea of what documents and ID to get when visiting the test center.
- Step 8: You will be sent a summary of your appointment details and it will shown on your account dashboard. You will also be sent a notification email.

PTE Syllabus and Exam Pattern
There are 4 Major sections in the PTE Academic Exam, Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. In this section, we’ll go through all of them and discuss what kind of questions to expect in each of those sections.
PTE Exam Speaking and Writing Section
It is a combined section in the PTE Exam. In this section both your speaking and writing sections are tested:
- Personal Introduction: You are not graded for this section
- Read-aloud: You’ll have to read a text which can be upto 60 words.
- Repeat sentence: You’ll have to read a text that can be upto 60 words.
- Describe an image: You’ll get 40 seconds to answer a question
- Re-tell Lecture: You’ll have to talk about a lecture of 90 seconds. You’ll get 40 seconds to answer the question
- Answer a short question: You’ll be asked to answer a question in one word or a few sentences.
- Summarize the written text: You’ll have to summarize a 300-word text within 10 mins
- Essay: Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic
PTE Exam Reading Section
- Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks - You will be given a paragraph of 300 words which will include gaps that you will have to fill with appropriate answers
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer: You will be given a paragraph of 300 words which you will have to read and select more than 1 correct answer in the given multiple-choice questions.
- Re-order Paragraphs: You’ll be given text boxes that will contain jumbled sentences. You’ll have to arrange the sentences in proper order for them to form a coherent paragraph.
- Fill in the Blanks: It is the same as the first section except it doesn’t include a paragraph.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Same as the second section but you’ll have to select only one correct answer.
PTE Exam Listening Section
- Summarize Spoken Text: You’ll be asked to listen to a 90-second recording and you’ll have to summarize the text within 50-60 words.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: You’ll be asked to answer multiple choice questions after listening to a 90 sec recording.
- Fill in the Blanks: You’ll be given a 90-second recording with gaps in the audio and you’ll be asked to fill the gaps (blanks) with appropriate answers.
- Highlight Correct Summary: You’ll have to listen to a recording and select a summary from the options that best summarizes the audio clip.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: You’ll have to listen to a recording and select a correct answer from all the questions asked afterward.
- Select Missing Word: Similar to the fill-in-the-blanks section
- Highlight Incorrect Words: You’ll be given a recording where incorrect words will be used. You will have to identify and select the incorrect words.
- Write from Dictation: You will have to write out the recording you’ll be given.
How to check PTE Results?
After you finish writing the PTE Exam you will receive the scores within 2 days. You can find the scores on your myPTE dashboard. You will also be notified by mail when your results are out. You can check your results by visiting The official pearson PTE website. By using your PTE login, log in to your myPTE account. After that navigate to the dashboard and check your results.
Countries that accept PTE
PTE For Australia:
The PTE Scores are accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Many universities in Australia accept scores above 50 to provide admission into their universities. The minimum PTE score considered for an Australian VISA is 42. Your PTE score is valid for 2 years.

Here are a few tips to score better in the PTE Academic Exam
- Tip 1: Know all the sections that are to be covered in the test thoroughly by understanding which skills each section tests and improving your skills accordingly
- Tip 2: Watch and listen to different media such as videos, lectures, shows, podcasts, and songs to improve your listening and speaking skills
- Tip 3: Search for different topics on the internet and try speaking on them for 10 minutes. This way you will notice the gaps in your vocabulary.
- Tip 4: To improve your reading skills you can try reading various newspapers, articles, magazines, and research papers.
- Tip 5: Try to be more spontaneous and don’t try to memorize the answers or a template to answer the questions.
- Tip 6: Practice a lot before the actual exam.
